Proform Treadmill Belt Slipping

- (Belt slip) When a drive belt is not as tight as it should be, it will slip on the pulley and thus will not transmit power. If a driven pulley is seized, the belt will also slip.
- A device formerly used for driving machinery, consisting of a large wheel with steps fitted into its inner surface. It was turned by the weight of people or animals treading the steps
- an exercise device consisting of an endless belt on which a person can walk or jog without changing place

cam belt change
feeding belt on anti clockwise starting at the crank (rag down there to stop it slipping) you need to keep the tension on while slipping the belt over the teeth of the cam pulleys. they won’t fit due to the old belt having stretched a bit so the 4 bolts around the cam pulleys need to be lossened 1/4 turn and the pulley turned clockwise as far as possible. you then turn it back anticlockwise no more than one tooth till the belt slips on. bolts are then nipped up.
This is repeated on the remaining 3 cam pulleys keeping the belt taught, easier said than done. You then have to take the tension off the tensioner and slip the belt over the tensionior, waterpump and rear bottom roller in one movement (much easier said than done) all without letting the belt slip off the rear cam pulley.
Once on the tensioner needs to be set, the locking pins removed and the crank turned twice clockwise. The theory goes that if nothing has gone wrong the pins will all slip straight in and it’s job done.
I spent the next 2 hours setting and resetting the belt tension and cam pulley positions until I was satisfied I could turn the engine an even number of times and get the pins straight back in.
reassembly is the reverse remembering to properly fill and bleed the coolant system.
In total this took me 12+ hours but would be more like 8 next time around. Like most difficult car jobs, the first time is the worst as you’re making it up as you go along.
Very satisfying to have done myself especially as I saved around ?700 on parts and lab compared to a main dealer. I don’t want to do it again soon though. Car sounds much quieter now for some reason and the new mount has removed the annoying jerkyness on pickup and lift off
